[Today's Window] The Venture Investor Who Reads Nature Papers

Everyone has their defining moments—whether in life or in their career. Such defining moments exert a lasting, profound influence on the life that follows. Over nearly two decades, I too have experienced several defining moments in my career.

After earning a doctorate in the field of integrative biotechnology and beginning my career as a so-called expert—having served as a university hospital professor, among other roles—I transformed into a venture investor investing in startups in the digital healthcare field. I founded the first company in Korea to invest in digital healthcare startups. The idea was that an expert in the field would directly invest in startups within that field.

Now, nearly ten years later, I am unusually still striving to maintain two distinct identities: that of a digital healthcare expert and that of a venture investor. In relation to this, I would like to share one defining moment that continues to influence me even now.

This is a story from the early days after founding my company. Through an acquaintance's introduction, I had the opportunity to meet a famous venture capitalist who had traveled from Silicon Valley to visit Korea. He was a renowned investor in the bio-healthcare field—he had invested early in a company that has now become the world's largest biotech, and at the time he was increasing his investments in the digital healthcare field.

I met him in the business lounge of an upscale hotel in Yeouido, but at first his demeanor was thoroughly indifferent. Frankly, it was understandable. These days, our company has established a presence such that virtually everyone in at least the domestic healthcare venture investment field knows us, and it has grown into a company with an investment portfolio of some 40 companies. But at the time, we were a small, nameless investment firm that had just gotten started. As for our investment portfolio, we had just one small startup called 3billion. It wouldn't have been far off to call us a shell company.

Just the two of us talked while looking down over the Yeouido scenery—he seemed to have reluctantly shown up for the meeting with me. Yet the man, who at first sat slumped diagonally into the sofa with an air of indifference, gradually shifted his posture forward toward me as our conversation went on.

For one thing, I was well acquainted with every promising digital healthcare startup in Silicon Valley that he mentioned. Though I was physically in Korea, our conversation would have been little different from one he might have had with a fellow venture investor in Silicon Valley. Even more decisive was the fact that I had read nearly all of the major papers in our field that he brought up, and I even recommended to him a few of the latest papers he hadn't yet read, insisting that he absolutely must read them.

After about an hour of talking like this, his attitude toward me had completely changed. When I thanked him after the meeting for taking the time, the words he said as he offered his hand for a handshake remain vivid to me even now: "It's always worth talking with a venture investor who reads Nature papers."

He probably doesn't remember saying this, but it was a defining moment that greatly influenced my career. It taught me that a specialist investor who focuses on investing in a particular field must never be lazy about honing that expertise. And I realized that even if we are not yet known globally, as long as we keep sharpening our expertise, true experts are bound to recognize it.

Since then, our company has grown considerably in size, and the number of companies we've invested in has increased even more, but even now I set aside a certain portion of my working hours to diligently read papers. Sometimes I even dedicate a significant part of my weekend to catching up on a backlog of papers. This process can feel arduous, like swimming against a raging current. But whenever it does, I steel myself by recalling the image of that famous venture investor shifting his posture at that Yeouido hotel, and that moment when I heard the words, "It's always worth talking with a venture investor who reads Nature papers."
