Orange Biomed: Helping People with Diabetes Enjoy a Brighter Everyday Life

Can we measure the traffic light of diabetes—the 'HbA1c level'—in the palm of our hand?

What kind of team is Orange Biomed?

Orange Biomed is a team that makes a portable HbA1c measuring device for people with diabetes. We founded the company in 2021. The team came together around the core technology of co-CEO Woonghyun Ko, who completed his doctoral studies at KAIST, with key personnel gathering around it. Thankfully, less than a year after founding, we received seed and Pre-A investments totaling over 3 billion won cumulatively, and we're growing rapidly. As of now, six team members are working together.

What is the HbA1c level, and why is it important?

Along with blood glucose, HbA1c is one of the levels that anyone with diabetes must measure. It's used to diagnose diabetes and is a level that needs to be monitored regularly to prevent diabetic complications. For example, if the level is 5.7% or higher, it indicates prediabetes and requires careful attention, and if it's 6.5% or higher, diabetes can be diagnosed.

I'm curious about how large the population is that needs to pay close attention to this level.

While people with diabetes need to measure their HbA1c level, it's also an important indicator for the general public in terms of prevention. Statistically, 1 in 8 Korean adults aged 30 or older has diabetes, and in reality, 27% of people with diabetes are undiagnosed and unaware that they have it. In the United States in particular, where dietary habits center on fattier and sweeter foods than in Korea, 33% of the entire population is prediabetic, and 11% actually have diabetes. Devices that measure 'blood glucose' have become widely available even in ordinary households, but in the case of HbA1c measuring devices, there is still no way to obtain an accurate reading without going to a hospital. The portable measuring device that Orange Biomed makes can expand accessibility to this kind of diabetes prevention and response.

So that low medical accessibility doesn't become someone's everyday reality

How did your experience in the United States influence your decision to start a company?

I always thought I should start a company if the following two conditions were met.

"The first was a 'global item,' and the second was 'technology that no one could replicate.'"

At the end of that resolve, I met co-founder and co-CEO Woonghyun Ko during my MBA program. I chose the MBA program at Duke University in the U.S. precisely because I thought I could discover a global item there. Understanding global items abroad, and my subsequent experience at a VC, cultivated the perspective that let me look further ahead rather than being confined to the item itself.

What was the direct trigger for your decision to found Orange Biomed?

While I was in the U.S., I got injured and was in an urgent situation where I could become disabled if I didn't have surgery within two weeks—but I couldn't get a hospital appointment. I spent a full six hours on the phone calling every hospital nearby, and I barely managed to secure one hospital, undergoing emergency surgery ten days later. After going through such an experience, I began to seriously think about the problem of medical accessibility in the United States. When I looked into it, I found that in the U.S., even people with diabetes had to wait anywhere from two weeks to up to a month just to get their HbA1c level tested. That sense of the problem became the driving force behind founding Orange Biomed.

Turning expensive hospital machines into home devices, dramatically strengthening medical accessibility

What kind of product is Orange Biomed's 'portable HbA1c measuring device'?

The U.S. market we're targeting has really poor medical accessibility compared to Korea. HbA1c devices are on the large and expensive side even within hospitals, so making them portable can save a tremendous amount of resources. Orange Biomed's device is a product that lets you measure HbA1c easily at home, just like taking a blood glucose test.

Was there a reason you chose to solve the problem with hardware rather than other medical software?

It's because this is the healthcare field. Ultimately, all healthcare begins with measuring a patient's biomarkers, and doing so requires a 'machine.' Recently, scales and glucometers have become widely available in households, and thermometers became mainstream through the pandemic. However, measuring HbA1c for diabetes management has very poor accessibility relative to the market size. In the end, we believe that true digital healthcare can only be realized when there's a home device, which is why we're solving the problem by manufacturing hardware.

What sets Orange Biomed's HbA1c measuring device apart?

It's 1/500 the price of the HbA1c devices used in hospitals. Even the PoC equipment released for home use costs around 5 million won, so ours is a groundbreakingly low price by comparison. Beyond price, the device itself is small and simple. We removed every function except the core function of 'measuring HbA1c levels.' The goal is to enhance the patient's user experience so that consistent management is possible.

Partnering with DHP, the VC that understands complex digital healthcare challenges most easily

How did you first come to know DHP?

I knew about DHP long before receiving investment. My older brother, who is a doctor, read CEO Yoonsup Choi's book and recommended it to me. Also, when I worked at my previous VC, I studied a lot of CEO Yoonsup Choi's insights while writing digital healthcare reports, and I referred to the blog often. Decisively, when I hosted a digital healthcare webinar at FuturePlay, where I previously worked, I invited CEO Yoonsup Choi as a speaker, and that's when our relationship began in earnest.

Why did you decide to accept DHP's investment?

Concepts like 'HbA1c' can be quite unfamiliar, so the process of explaining the concept and persuading investors of why it matters takes quite a long time. Because DHP is mostly composed of partners who are medical professionals and experts in the medical field, we could skip this process. I think that let us channel that energy into better convincing them of the potential of the services and products we make.

Is there an example that was most helpful after DHP's investment?

The passion DHP showed us after investing was deeply moving. Once you receive investment, all the resources a portfolio company needs are organized on a Notion page, and a network you can reach out to at any time is well established. For example, distributing press releases takes a lot of resources and isn't easy for an early-stage startup, but the system where you write and distribute according to the guides organized in Notion and get it turned into an article right away was really helpful.
