디지털 헬스케어 스타트업 전문 투자사, 디지털 헬스케어 파트너스 (이하 DHP, 대표 파트너 최윤섭)는 미국의 재활 치료 클리닉을 대상으로 원격 치료 모니터링 플랫폼을 제공하는 픽스업 헬스 (미국 법인명 PhyxUp Health, 대표이사 임상원)에 투자했다고 7월 18일 밝혔다. 픽스업 헬스는 실리콘밸리에 본사를 둔 미국 스타트업이다.
재활 치료의 성과는 환자들이 외래 진료 후 가정에서 재활 운동 프로그램을 수행하는 것에 달려 있다. 하지만 수행률이 낮고, 재활 운동을 잘못 수행하여 오히려 통증이 악화되는 경우가 많다. 그럼에도 지금까지 미국의 가정 재활 운동 프로그램에 대한 지도는 구두 설명, 운동 책자, 유튜브 영상 링크를 제공하는 정도에 머무르고 있다.
픽스업 헬스는 재활 치료사가 환자에게 재활 치료 프로그램을 손쉽게 제공하고, 모니터링할 수 있으며, 특히 보험 청구까지 가능하게 해주는 원격 모니터링 소프트웨어를 서비스한다. 치료사는 픽스업의 영상 라이브러리에서 환자에게 필요한 영상을 직접 선택하여 제공할 수 있다. 이러한 재활 운동 프로그램은 각종 논문 및 표준 치료 가이드라인 및 임상원 대표의 치료 경험에 기반한 알고리즘에 의해 제공된다. 이 플랫폼을 통해 환자는 재활 프로그램을 수행하고, 통증 정도를 기록하며, 활동량은 자동 집계 된다. 또한 치료사와 환자 간의 1:1 채팅과 영상 통화도 가능하다.
특히, 재활 클리닉의 입장에서는 치료사가 픽스업 헬스의 솔루션을 통해 손쉽게 관련 보험 수가를 청구할 수 있다는 것이 장점이다. 코로나19 이후 미국에서는 원격 치료 모니터링(Remote Therapeutic Monitoring)과 관련한 다양한 보험 수가 코드가 신설되었다. 하지만 기존의 방식으로는 수가 청구에 필요한 조건을 충족하기가 쉽지 않아, 해당 코드의 보험 청구가 잘 이뤄지지 않는 상황이었다.
하지만 픽스업 헬스의 솔루션을 활용하면 환자의 재활 운동 모니터링 및 데이터 분석에 일정 시간을 소요했다는 점 등을 증명할 수 있기 때문에 수가 청구에 필요한 요건을 쉽게 충족시킬 수 있다. 즉, 픽스업의 솔루션을 도입함으로써 재활 치료 클리닉은 경제적 이익을 증대시킬 수 있는 것이다.
이에 픽스업 헬스는 미국 서부의 1~2인으로 구성된 소규모 재활 치료 클리닉을 1차 타깃으로, 시장 진입에 박차를 가하고 있다. 또한, 현재 미국 하버드 의대 계열 임상 연구소인 힌다·아서 마커스 노화연구소 (Hinda and Arthur Marcus Institute for Aging Research)와 리서치 파트너십을 체결하였고, 하버드 의대 부속병원 히브루 재활 센터 (Hebrew Rehab Center)가 픽스업 헬스의 솔루션 도입을 추진 중이다.
픽스업 헬스의 임상원 대표는 미국 MGH 보건전문대학원에서 재활치료학 석사, 하버드 공중보건대학원에서 질병 역학 석사를 취득한 인재로, 하버드 의대 부속병원 히브루재활센터 (Hebrew Rehab Center)와 매사추세츠 종합병원(Mass General Hospital)에서 재활치료사와 데이터 분석가로 근무한 헬스케어 전문가이다. 재활 치료 현장에서 발견한 문제를 풀기 위해서 픽스업 헬스를 2023년 창업했다.
이번 투자에는 DHP를 비롯하여, 이스라엘의 벤처캐피털인 래빗(Rabbit) VC에도 참여했다. 투자 금액은 비공개다.
픽스업 헬스 임상원 대표는 "재활치료는 치료사와 환자가 함께하는 긴 여정이기에, 이들의 치료 과정을 더욱 효율적이고 신속하게 돕는 디지털 솔루션이 필요하다."라며, "투자 유치와 DHP의 지원을 바탕으로 미국 재활치료 시장에서 독보적인 위치를 선점하고, 기술을 통해 재활치료사들의 업무 효율성 증대와 환자의 빠른 회복에 기여하겠다."고 포부를 밝혔다.
DHP 최윤섭 대표는 "픽스업 헬스는 폭발적으로 성장하는 미국의 원격 치료 모니터링 시장의 기회를 현장의 전문가가 잘 포착한 것에서 시작한 스타트업"이라며, "픽스업 헬스가 미국 재활 치료 시장을 장악하는 서비스로 성장할 수 있도록 최선을 다해 지원하겠다"고 말했다.

A Silicon Valley startup founded by a Harvard-trained rehabilitation therapy expert
Digital Healthcare Partners (hereinafter DHP, Managing Partner Yoonsup Choi), an investment firm specializing in digital healthcare startups, announced on July 18 that it has invested in PhyxUp Health (U.S. corporate name PhyxUp Health, CEO Sang-Won Lim), a company providing a remote therapeutic monitoring platform for rehabilitation clinics in the United States. PhyxUp Health is a U.S. startup headquartered in Silicon Valley.
The outcome of rehabilitation therapy depends on patients performing their rehabilitation exercise programs at home following outpatient visits. However, adherence rates are low, and in many cases patients perform their rehabilitation exercises incorrectly, which actually worsens their pain. Despite this, guidance for home rehabilitation exercise programs in the United States has so far remained limited to verbal explanations, exercise booklets, and links to YouTube videos.
PhyxUp Health offers remote monitoring software that enables rehabilitation therapists to easily provide and monitor rehabilitation therapy programs for their patients, and, notably, to file insurance claims. Therapists can directly select and provide the videos that patients need from PhyxUp's video library. These rehabilitation exercise programs are delivered through an algorithm based on various research papers, standard treatment guidelines, and CEO Sang-Won Lim's own clinical experience. Through this platform, patients carry out their rehabilitation programs and record their pain levels, while their activity levels are automatically tracked. In addition, one-on-one chat and video calls between therapists and patients are also available.
In particular, a key advantage for rehabilitation clinics is that therapists can easily file the relevant insurance claims through PhyxUp Health's solution. Since COVID-19, various insurance reimbursement codes related to Remote Therapeutic Monitoring have been newly established in the United States. However, under existing approaches, it was not easy to meet the conditions required for reimbursement claims, so claims under these codes were not being filed effectively.
However, by using PhyxUp Health's solution, clinics can demonstrate that they have spent a certain amount of time monitoring patients' rehabilitation exercises and analyzing their data, making it easy to meet the requirements for reimbursement claims. In other words, by adopting PhyxUp's solution, rehabilitation clinics can increase their economic gains.
Accordingly, PhyxUp Health is accelerating its market entry, targeting as its initial focus small rehabilitation clinics on the U.S. West Coast staffed by one to two people. In addition, the company has entered into a research partnership with the Hinda and Arthur Marcus Institute for Aging Research, a clinical research institute affiliated with Harvard Medical School, and the Hebrew Rehab Center, a Harvard Medical School-affiliated hospital, is currently pursuing the adoption of PhyxUp Health's solution.
PhyxUp Health CEO Sang-Won Lim earned a master's degree in rehabilitation therapy from the MGH Institute of Health Professions and a master's degree in disease epidemiology from the Harvard School of Public Health. He is a healthcare professional who worked as a rehabilitation therapist and data analyst at the Hebrew Rehab Center, a Harvard Medical School-affiliated hospital, and at Massachusetts General Hospital. He founded PhyxUp Health in 2023 to solve problems he had discovered on the front lines of rehabilitation therapy.
This investment round included, in addition to DHP, the Israeli venture capital firm Rabbit VC. The investment amount was not disclosed.
PhyxUp Health CEO Sang-Won Lim shared his aspirations, saying, "Because rehabilitation therapy is a long journey undertaken together by therapist and patient, digital solutions are needed to support their treatment process more efficiently and quickly." He added, "Building on this investment and DHP's support, we will secure a unique position in the U.S. rehabilitation therapy market and, through technology, contribute to improving the work efficiency of rehabilitation therapists and to the faster recovery of patients."
DHP Managing Partner Yoonsup Choi said, "PhyxUp Health is a startup that began when a frontline expert astutely seized the opportunity in the explosively growing U.S. remote therapeutic monitoring market," adding, "We will do our utmost to support PhyxUp Health so that it can grow into a service that dominates the U.S. rehabilitation therapy market."
