AI-based musculoskeletal rehabilitation robot startup 'Medisby'
Founded by a Severance orthopedic surgery professor, boosting treatment efficiency 6x through automation technology
Digital Healthcare Partners (hereinafter DHP, Managing Partner Yoonsup Choi), a specialized investment firm for digital healthcare startups, announced on April 22 that it had made a seed investment (amount undisclosed) in Medisby (CEO Jun-Yeol Lim), which develops AI-based non-surgical musculoskeletal treatment robot solutions. Medisby is a startup transforming the rehabilitation treatment paradigm through technology that has robots perform repetitive joint mobilization on behalf of clinicians.
Joint mobilization is an essential element in treating musculoskeletal patients, but it has practical limitations in that it requires labor-intensive time from specialized medical professionals. In the conventional manual therapy approach, a single therapist spends about 30 minutes per treatment session, and can only treat 10 to 15 patients per day. In particular, the proportion of attending physicians who directly participate in treatment is less than 3%, so treatment accessibility and quality inevitably varied greatly from patient to patient.
To solve these problems, Medisby is developing a medical device that provides joint mobilization based on AI-assisted functions and a robotic arm. When an attending physician or physical therapist sets the treatment movements for about 3 minutes, the robot learns those movements and performs them repeatedly. Through this process, the time medical staff need to participate in a single treatment session can be reduced to about 5 minutes compared to the conventional approach. When treatment is provided using multiple robots, the number of patients a single clinician can treat per day can be expanded to around 90. In addition, the treatment implementation rate of the attending physician—who knows the patient best—can rise to around 60%, enabling more precise and consistent treatment.
The technological strengths are also clear. Existing treatment devices have a limited application range and limited application postures. However, Medisby's product can be applied to both the upper and lower extremities and enables a variety of movements. With diverse application postures as well, clinicians can provide customized treatment to patients, and stepwise treatment can be applied according to a patient's condition.
Beyond simple repetitive movements, Medisby aims to eventually transition to an AI-based fully automated treatment system. Initially the robot performs treatment movements based on clinician settings, but in the long term the company plans to evolve into an autonomous treatment system in which the robot itself determines and provides treatment movements suited to the patient's condition. Going forward, Medisby also plans to enter global markets such as the United States, Japan, China, and Uzbekistan.
CEO Jun-Yeol Lim is a clinical assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at Gangnam Severance Hospital of Yonsei University Health System, and founded the company based on his deep clinical experience in musculoskeletal treatment. He began developing the solution in earnest after winning the top faculty award at the 2022 'Yonsei University Health System–Doosan Robotics Idea Fair,' and the following year, in 2023, he won the New Medical Technology Excellence Award from the Korean Orthopaedic Association, proving the solution's applicability in clinical settings and its technical maturity. Since then, through prototype development and proof-of-concept (PoC) processes, it has been developed into the current AI rehabilitation robot technology.
Through this investment, DHP has taken note of Medisby's technological potential and business scalability, and plans to continue active support, including additional R&D funding through a Deep-Tech TIPS recommendation and connections to testbed hospitals.
Medisby CEO Jun-Yeol Lim said, "Many patients recognize the need for repetitive rehabilitation treatment, but in reality treatment is often limited due to the time constraints and labor intensity faced by medical staff. We aim to solve this bottleneck through robotics technology and create an environment where medical staff can focus more on their core expertise." He added, "Going forward, we will develop this into an AI-based fully automated treatment system and set a new standard for patient-customized robotic rehabilitation treatment."
DHP analyst Ga-Young Hong said, "By having robots automate repetitive physical therapy tasks, we can reduce the labor burden on medical professionals while dramatically improving the accessibility and quality of treatment. Medisby is a team deeply rooted in the real-world needs of clinical settings, and we expect they will be able to create a global impact in the digital rehabilitation field."
