DHP, 턱관절 장애 디지털 치료제 개발사 '비욘드메디슨'에 투자DHP Invests in Beyond Medicine, Developer of a Digital Therapeutic for Temporomandibular Disorders
디지털 헬스케어 파트너스(DHP)는 디지털 치료제(DTx)를 개발하는 스타트업 '비욘드메디슨'(Beyond Medicine)에 신규 투자했다고 30일 밝혔다. 투자액은 비공개다.
비욘드메디슨은 '턱관절 장애'(TMD)를 적응증으로 한 DTx '클릭리스'(Clickless)를 개발 중인 헬스케어 스타트업이다.
클릭리스는 맞춤형 생활 습관 개선, 통증 기록 기반 인지 행동 치료, 자가 재활 운동 프로그램, 명상 치료 등으로 구성됐다. 하루 10분, 총 6주간의 비약물 치료를 제공한다.
클릭리스는 분당서울대병원에서 진행된 탐색 임상 시험에서 통증과 입 벌림폭 개선 등 유의미한 결과를 도출했다. 해당 결과는 SCI급 학술지에 게재됐다.
연구 결과를 바탕으로 클릭리스는 식품의약품안전처로부터 치과 분야 혁신의료기기로 지정되는 성과를 거뒀다.
비욘드메디슨은 클릭리스 식약처 인허가를 위한 다기관 확증 임상을 마치고 품목허가를 신청했다. 올해 하반기 실제 임상 현장에서의 처방 시작을 목표로 한다.
비욘드메디슨은 비급여 처방에 익숙한 치과 진료 환경에 주목해 클릭리스 초기 시장 진입 전략을 수립했다. 대표적인 구강외과·구강내과 전문가들을 자문단으로 확보하고, 치과 전문 박람회와 세미나를 통해 전국 1000개 이상의 병·의원과 처방 협력 네트워크를 구축했다.
홍가영 DHP 심사역은 이번 투자를 통해 "기존 치료법의 한계와 환자의 높은 수요에도 적절한 솔루션이 부족했던 턱관절 장애 영역에서 디지털 기반의 정밀 치료법을 제시한다는 점을 주목했다"면서 "임상성과, 시장 전략, 제품 설계 등 여러 측면에서 팀의 실행력이 돋보였고, 디지털 치료제의 실질적 상용화를 선도할 수 있는 기업이라 판단했다"고 투자 이유를 전했다.
김대현 비욘드메디슨 대표는 "DTx는 기술 자체보다 의료 현장에서의 적용성과 전달 방식이 핵심이다"면서 "비욘드메디슨은 치과 임상 환경에서의 적합성에 집중해 클릭리스를 설계했다. 앞으로도 의료진과 환자 모두에게 실질적인 치료 효과를 제공할 수 있도록 노력하겠다"고 말했다.
한편, 김대현 비욘드메디슨 대표는 연세대학교 치의학과를 졸업한 치과의사다. 임상 경험을 바탕으로 실제 의료 현장에서 활용 가능한 디지털 치료제를 직접 설계해 왔다.
비욘드메디슨은 향후 클릭리스의 미국 식품의약국(FDA) 인허가를 거쳐 글로벌 시장 진출 등을 계획하고 있다. 이를 위한 임상 전략 수립과 파트너십 구축을 추진 중이다. 후속 투자 유치와 민간투자주도형 기술창업지원(TIPS) 선정에 나설 방침이다.
Digital Healthcare Partners (DHP) announced on the 30th that it has made a new investment in Beyond Medicine, a startup developing digital therapeutics (DTx). The investment amount was not disclosed.
Beyond Medicine is a healthcare startup developing Clickless, a DTx indicated for temporomandibular disorders (TMD).
Clickless consists of personalized lifestyle improvement, pain-record-based cognitive behavioral therapy, self-directed rehabilitation exercise programs, and meditation therapy. It provides non-pharmacological treatment for a total of six weeks, 10 minutes a day.
In an exploratory clinical trial conducted at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, Clickless produced significant results, including improvements in pain and mouth-opening range. These results were published in an SCI-indexed journal.
Based on these research findings, Clickless achieved the milestone of being designated an innovative medical device in the dental field by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS).
Beyond Medicine has completed its multicenter confirmatory clinical trial for MFDS approval of Clickless and applied for product authorization. It aims to begin prescriptions in actual clinical settings in the second half of this year.
Beyond Medicine established its early market-entry strategy for Clickless by focusing on the dental care environment, which is accustomed to non-reimbursed prescriptions. It has secured leading oral surgery and oral medicine specialists as its advisory group, and through dental trade fairs and seminars, has built a prescription collaboration network with more than 1,000 hospitals and clinics nationwide.
Gayoung Hong, an investment associate at DHP, explained the reasons for the investment: "We took note of the fact that Clickless offers a digital-based, precision treatment approach in the area of temporomandibular disorders, where appropriate solutions have been lacking despite the limitations of existing therapies and high patient demand." She added, "The team's execution capabilities stood out across many dimensions, including clinical outcomes, market strategy, and product design, and we judged this to be a company capable of leading the practical commercialization of digital therapeutics."
Daehyun Kim, CEO of Beyond Medicine, said, "For DTx, the key lies not in the technology itself but in its applicability and delivery method in the clinical setting." He continued, "Beyond Medicine designed Clickless with a focus on suitability within the dental clinical environment. We will continue to strive to deliver real therapeutic benefits to both clinicians and patients."
Meanwhile, Daehyun Kim, CEO of Beyond Medicine, is a dentist who graduated from Yonsei University's College of Dentistry. Drawing on his clinical experience, he has personally designed digital therapeutics that can be used in actual medical settings.
Beyond Medicine plans to enter the global market by obtaining U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for Clickless. To this end, it is pursuing the establishment of a clinical strategy and the building of partnerships. It also plans to attract follow-on investment and pursue selection for the Tech Incubator Program for Startup (TIPS).
