매일경제 'MK히든챔피언'이 최윤섭 DHP 대표를 인터뷰했습니다. 최 대표는 "헬스케어 산업은 글로벌 규제가 개선되고 국내 사업 여건도 좋아지고 있어 미래가 밝다"며, "한국을 넘어 글로벌 시장에서도 존재감을 갖는 디지털 헬스케어 전문 투자사로 자리매김하겠다"는 비전을 밝혔습니다. 팀엘리시움·마인드허브를 비롯한 DHP 투자사 5곳이 세계 최대 가전 전시회 'CES 2025'에 참여하는 등, 포트폴리오사들의 글로벌 진출도 본격화되고 있습니다.
DHP는 2016년 의료 전문가들이 중심이 되어 창업한 디지털 헬스케어 스타트업 전문 투자사이자 액셀러레이터(AC)입니다. 최근 코스닥에 상장한 AI 기반 유전체 분석 기업 쓰리빌리언을 비롯해 혈당 관리 플랫폼 닥터다이어리, 성형·미용 의료 정보 플랫폼 강남언니(힐링페이퍼) 등 총 47개 스타트업에 투자했습니다. 내과·소아과·산부인과·정신과 전문의와 식약처 출신 규제 전문가, 헬스케어 창업자들이 파트너로 참여하며, 삼성서울병원·분당서울대병원 등 3,000병상 이상의 의료기관 네트워크를 통해 임상연구와 테스트베드를 제공합니다.
최 대표는 포스텍에서 컴퓨터공학과 생명과학을 복수전공하고 전산생물학 박사 학위를 받은 뒤, 서울대 의대 연구교수로 컴퓨터공학과 생명공학을 융합하는 연구를 수행하며 '디지털 헬스케어'라는 개념을 국내에 처음 소개한 인물입니다. 그는 의료 전문성을 갖춘 투자자가 드물던 2016년, 전문성을 바탕으로 스타트업을 육성하면 투자 성공 가능성을 높일 수 있다는 확신으로 DHP를 시작했다고 회고합니다. 지난해 7월에는 삼성서울병원·분당서울대병원 창업보육센터, 연세대 바이오헬스기술지주, 루닛, 스트롱벤처스 등이 참여한 컨소시엄으로 TIPS 운영사에 신규 선정됐습니다.
규제 환경에 대해 최 대표는 "식약처가 선제적으로 합리적인 규제 방안을 내놓으며 글로벌 규제를 선도하고 있고, 혁신의료기기 통합심사·평가 제도 도입 등 보험 급여 여건도 좋아지고 있다"고 분석했습니다. 그는 "딥테크를 기반으로 의료를 혁신하는 디지털 헬스케어 스타트업에 활발히 투자하고, 국내 스타트업의 세계 시장 진출을 돕는 것은 물론 미국을 비롯한 글로벌 헬스케어 스타트업 투자 비중도 늘려가겠다"고 밝혔습니다.
Maeil Business Newspaper's 'MK Hidden Champion' interviewed Yoonsup Choi, CEO of DHP. Choi stated, "The healthcare industry has a bright future, as global regulations are improving and domestic business conditions are getting better," and shared his vision to "establish DHP as a digital healthcare-focused investment firm with a strong presence not only in Korea but also in the global market." With five DHP portfolio companies, including Team Elysium and MindHub, participating in the world's largest consumer electronics exhibition, 'CES 2025,' the global expansion of the firm's portfolio companies is gaining full momentum.
Founded in 2016 by medical professionals, DHP is an investment firm and accelerator (AC) specializing in digital healthcare startups. It has invested in a total of 47 startups, including 3billion, an AI-based genome analysis company recently listed on KOSDAQ, blood glucose management platform Dr. Diary, and cosmetic and aesthetic medical information platform Gangnam Unni (Healing Paper). Its partners include specialists in internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, and psychiatry, as well as regulatory experts from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety and healthcare founders. Through a network of medical institutions with over 3,000 beds, including Samsung Medical Center and Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, it provides clinical research and testbeds.
CEO Choi double-majored in computer science and life sciences at POSTECH and earned a Ph.D. in computational biology. He then served as a research professor at Seoul National University College of Medicine, conducting research that integrated computer science and bioengineering, and became the first person to introduce the concept of 'digital healthcare' in Korea. He recalls launching DHP in 2016, at a time when investors with medical expertise were rare, out of the conviction that nurturing startups based on such expertise could increase the likelihood of investment success. Last July, DHP was newly selected as a TIPS operator as part of a consortium that included the startup incubation centers of Samsung Medical Center and Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, Yonsei University's Bio-Health Technology Holdings, Lunit, and Strong Ventures.
Regarding the regulatory environment, Choi analyzed, "The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety is leading global regulation by proactively introducing reasonable regulatory measures, and insurance reimbursement conditions are also improving with the introduction of the integrated review and evaluation system for innovative medical devices." He stated, "We will actively invest in digital healthcare startups that innovate medicine based on deep tech, help domestic startups enter the global market, and also increase our investment share in global healthcare startups, including those in the United States."
