[Health-tech Korea] What it takes to boost Korea's digital health care[Health-tech Korea] What it takes to boost Korea's digital health care

The Korea Herald's 'Health-tech Korea' series interviewed Yoonsup Choi, CEO of DHP. Choi assesses that Korea possesses world-class technological capabilities that can be applied to healthcare, including artificial intelligence, deep learning, cloud computing, and genomic analysis.

However, he points out that healthcare involves a complex web of stakeholders companies, startups, investors, regulators, hospitals, doctors, and patientsmeaning that barriers to entry exist which cannot be overcome through product development alone. In particular, he explains that because Korea has high and affordable access to medical care, the incentives for digital healthcare innovation have actually been weaker in contrast to the United States, where low accessibility led telemedicine and smartphone-based diagnostics to develop first as cost-saving measures.

He also emphasizes that the absence of clear regulatory guidelines for AI medical devices and wearables poses a major business risk, warning that Korea is missing its so-called 'golden window.' Choi states that DHP's role is to build a stable ecosystem that connects startups, the medical community, and investment.
