Economic Review's "People Are the Answer" series featured Yoonsup Choi, CEO of DHP. Citing a forecast (Samjong KPMG) that the global digital healthcare market will grow rapidly from $21 billion in 2014 to $101.5 billion in 2020, Choi emphasizes the potential of this field as an innovation that improves quality of life.
He points out that Korea's digital healthcare startups face a "quadruple, even quintuple burden" among a variety of stakeholders—patients, the government, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service, large corporations, and hospitals. In this environment, DHP distinguishes itself by considering not only the business viability that ordinary investors look at, but also "whether it is medically sound and whether the business is truly needed in Korea."
Choi, who double-majored in computer science and biotechnology at POSTECH and earned a Ph.D. in computational biology, explains that DHP is also working hard to grow the ecosystem—providing free advisory sessions (office hours) to numerous startups every month and co-hosting healthcare hackathons with Samsung Medical Center. DHP is joined by expert partners from various fields, including medicine, regulation, ICT, and design.
