Living Healthier and More Confidently: The Beginning of KILO
What kind of team is KILO?
KILO is a team with a vision to help people live healthier and more confident lives. Under this vision, we've built our weight-management app, milligram, as a service.
What made you decide to found KILO?
KILO wasn't a business I set out to launch as a 'startup' from the very beginning. After entering university, I happened to develop an interest in entrepreneurship through a class, and around that time I was active in a startup society called 'Insiders.' I enjoyed the energy of the startup scene, so I went on to intern at Watcha. Ironically, the conclusion I drew from that experience was, 'I shouldn't start a business.' I came to see both sides of entrepreneurship, which I had vaguely thought would just be fun—things like the burdens and risks a founder has to bear.
After that, I joined Zigzag and chose life as a developer, but I think I always wanted to build lots of side projects within that. So after leaving, I built an app related to pregnancy, and even made an app about military service, though it never launched. Then, in April 2020, I planned and built a service called 'milligram.' That was the start of the milligram service as it exists today.
You worked on side projects in various areas—why did you settle on 'diet management'?
First of all, I had a huge amount of interest in this industry. I was very interested in dieting and I loved working out. At the time there were many calorie-based diet-management apps, but such services were hard to keep using. Drawing on my experience using various services, I thought I could build my own, so I made the milligram app, and the early user response wasn't bad at all.
That said, it's not that I had conviction from the start and expanded it into a business. While I was debating whether to keep this item as a personal project or grow it into a business, conviction grew as users gathered, and that's how I ended up founding the company.
You initially decided not to start a business—why did you decide to found one after all?
Because of a thirst for a life spent grappling fiercely with problems. Through my earlier work experiences and side projects, I had done just about everything I could as an iOS developer at the time. So when I was making milligram, I was, quite literally, living as an 'idler.' I don't think I found that physically comfortable life enjoyable. Even if it's physically hard, I think I had a thirst for the process of constantly thinking and debating to ship features.
Starting from there, I reflected on the question, 'What kind of life do I want?' and reached the conclusion that if I didn't start a business now, it would be hard to do it later. What turned that resolve into conviction was milligram's users. At the time we had 150,000–200,000 downloads. That was a successful result for a side project. Given that we had reached that scale of users, I became dominated by the thought that if I didn't build a business on top of it, there would be no next chance. So I decided to take the hard but exciting path.
What will KILO look like in 5 or 10 years?
I think this industry itself is deeply meaningful. One answer to the question, 'How do I do my part in life before I die?' can be to have a positive impact on society through entrepreneurship. Through the milligram service that KILO is building, the daily lives of individuals are changing one by one, and I believe that as these changes accumulate, it will ultimately become something truly meaningful. So the process of building an app and service related to 'health'—perhaps the most essential part of being human—is truly enjoyable. It has become the driving force that keeps me from losing my passion even in difficult moments while running the business.
The Pacemaker for Diet Management: milligram
In planning the service, what market problem did you discover and define?
There are a great many healthcare services out there. Even so, there aren't many services led by the keyword 'confidence,' which I think makes it all the more meaningful. In my own case, there was a time when I weighed in the 50-kilogram range, and through exercise I got up to the 70-kilogram range. Through that process, I think not just my health but my attitude toward life changed. I thought I should build a service that moves beyond simple dieting—gaining or losing weight—to help people live more confident lives through that process.
The social-impact dimension really stands out.
I think the 'confidence' people gain from using milligram is the positive influence we can offer. The way we encourage confidence is rooted in changing people's mindsets. Rather than fitting your body to a uniform standard of beauty, our long-term goal is to help people gain the confidence that whatever they look like is perfectly fine. We're starting out as a diet-management app, but building on that, refreshing people's attitude toward life and their perspective on themselves is something we're always keeping in mind.
How did the KILO team building milligram come together?
Director Eunhee Choi, who's working with us now, I met at the startup society Insiders. If I brought a technical background, Director Choi had deep experience in branding, marketing, and organizational management—things I lacked. She understood well what elements form the foundation for growing into a solid startup, so the very first thing I did when starting KILO was to recruit Eunhee. The rest—the designer and server developers—are people we met later through the hiring process. Now seven of us work full-time toward the same goal.
Users, Users, and More Users!
What sets milligram apart from other services?
There are parts that resemble and parts that differ from existing diet-management services, but milligram is built by thoroughly considering user needs. In the early days, milligram's core values were simplicity and minimalism. We removed everything that could inconvenience users and minimized the diet-logging process. From then up to now, we've been focusing much more on 'motivation.' Since weight management is not an easy process, we're now at the stage of thinking about how to make it sustainable. And the core of all these directions is the 'user.'
It seems there'd be many challenges in basing everything on users.
For about the first year after launching the service, reflecting user needs and feedback wasn't hard. When we first launched the app and added each feature, users left lots of reviews, so we practiced 'user-driven development,' adding the features they wanted really quickly. For example: please add a workout feature; once we added that, please add a water-logging feature; I want to log body measurements too. I think we followed along by developing the features they requested.
After building the service that way for a year, roughly all the features users needed had gone in, within the bounds of keeping it simple—and that's when it got hard. Once user requests dried up, we had to figure out what step to take next. So we went through a process of forming and testing various hypotheses, one of which was, 'If you do it together with others, the service-retention rate will be higher.' In the course of validating this, the group feature was launched.
A Pacemaker for Everyone Who Wants to Live Healthily
Who are milligram's users?
They're people who are passionate about living their lives on their own terms. It's a service that naturally draws together people who want to build a confident life through weight management. The generation with a relatively high concentration of such people is the MZ generation, and they make up our main user base.
What kind of company does KILO want to be to people?
A coach or pacemaker for weight management. We want to be a reliable companion who is always there beside everyone who wants to live a healthy life, cheering them on and, at times, cracking the whip. From a broader perspective, we want to become a leading player in the relatively untapped weight-management market. We aim to grow into the app people think of first when it comes to weight management.
DHP, an Investor That Works Like a Startup: Understanding Each Other
What challenges were you facing at the time you received the investment?
I think we thought a lot about the timing of raising funds. Given the nature of the diet industry, timing—like year-end and the start of the year—has a bigger impact than you'd expect, which is why we raised our investment in November 2021. We judged that we needed to build the momentum to run hard in the early part of the year and the first half. In this process, I remember being surprised at how quickly DHP made its investment decision. The managing partner visited our office on the very day of the first meeting, and a few days later the IR was scheduled right away. From the first meeting to the commitment, it took only about three to four days.
Is there a memorable episode from DHP's investment process or from events afterward?
I understand DHP is a house with seven years of track record. Even so, I was amazed that it felt like a startup that hadn't even reached its first year. Compared to other VCs I've met, DHP gave off the feeling of a newly opened restaurant where everyone works hard—while still retaining the know-how and seasoning of the experts within. In that sense, I felt they were a team that is both mature and strong in execution.
