Giving Women's Health Wings to Soar: Happy Moonday

Building a Menstruation Universe: Happy Moonday

What kind of team is Happy Moonday?

We are a menstruation-centered healthcare startup pursuing the mission of "healthier lives for more women." As a femtech leader providing women's health services, commerce, and content all at once, we are building an unrivaled competitive edge.

You founded Happy Moonday after starting with a social impact side project. Was there a moment when you made up your mind?

In 2016, I ran a 'first period guidebook' and a 'one-year sanitary pad donation subscription' as side projects. Honestly, during the period of running these side projects, I tried my best not to start a company. It took me about a year to make up my mind to start a business. That's because I had prior experience co-founding a company, so while I knew that a startup could let you do heart-pounding work, I was also well aware of the arduous processes that come as the flip side.

Even so, as I carried on with this project, I naturally became convinced that, both as a woman and from an entrepreneur's perspective, I wanted to discover and solve the empty space I saw. Meanwhile, while running the side projects, I discovered three important issues:

  • Especially regarding women's health such as menstruation, there is a lack of accurate and useful health information that is easily accessible.
  • Options for menstrual products are limited, and it is hard to find information about their materials or manufacturing processes.
  • Healthcare gaps arise depending on socioeconomic circumstances, and when adolescents beginning menstruation cannot properly obtain menstrual products or have no one to kindly explain the changes to them, it can even negatively affect their very identity as women.

Prompted by these discoveries, since founding a company was the only way to solve these problems well and quickly, I naturally decided to start one.

How much conviction did you have in women's health as a business focus?

Rather than conviction in a specific product, I was convinced about the need—that I wasn't the only one experiencing problems related to women's health, especially menstrual life. And companies taking a technological approach to health, including menstrual life, which has a huge impact on women's lives, were practically nonexistent. "It struck me as strange that there wasn't a single startup seriously tackling the women's health problems experienced by half the population." My resolve to solve this problem was firm.

Because It Deserves to Be More Comfortable and Healthier: Menstrual Product Subscription

What problem in the market did you discover and define?

There was a clear need for services related to women's health. Yet there was no model that satisfied these needs in an integrated way. I was convinced that offering an integrated women's health experience—beyond fragmented services limited to menstruation—would be a differentiator. This discovery led to Happy Moonday's three main business pillars: content, commerce, and services.

1) Archive and disseminate, as content, health information that is easy to understand and can be trusted and applied. 2) Develop healthy and comfortable menstrual products, and further, curate and provide products that can help with various women's health concerns. 3) Use 'technology' to expand access to women's health and build a super-app service that has records, care, commerce, and information all in one.

Why did you start the subscription service?

A major characteristic of menstrual life is that it is a recurring event. So I felt a service based on the periodicity of menstrual life was, in a sense, something that ought to exist. The 'subscription' service lets people receive products tailored to their menstrual cycle according to their usage patterns and preferences. Since launching in 2017, cumulative subscription deliveries have surpassed 300,000. We support users "so that they never get caught off guard without a pad when their period starts, and so they can use good-quality products comfortably and conveniently."

Healthier Lives for More Women, in the Palm of Your Hand: Heymoon

Compared to other services, what sets Heymoon apart?

'Heymoon' is differentiated from other menstrual calendar apps in that, beyond pregnancy and childbirth, it lets you record and manage your body and emotions as they change with your menstrual cycle. Within Heymoon, you can observe changes throughout your menstrual cycle while finding health-related information, get answers to your concerns through simple tests, and buy or subscribe to menstrual products and women's health products. All of this happens within a single app.

As an app centered on menstruation, it also predicts your next period well. "The Heymoon algorithm shortened the margin of error in predicting period dates by about two days compared to the standard calculation method." Since its launch on the iOS App Store in 2020, it reached 1 million cumulative downloads in 21 months. Currently, one in five women aged 15–24 in Korea has a Heymoon account.

Commerce has become a key feature within the app.

We believe that products you can use healthily and comfortably are a good starting point for menstrual care. Happy Moonday shares its philosophy when making products, and on that basis, we are building the trust and affection of many users with menstrual products that 'leave only what's needed rather than adding something extra.'

So that Happy Moonday comes to mind at any moment you encounter women's health

'Women's Health' as a Total Art Form Created with Technology as the Means

We're curious about the people building Happy Moonday while sharing this mission.

Happy Moonday is built by about 30 team members. I take pride in saying our team members are talented enough to be welcomed anywhere. Even while taking on a certain degree of risk that comes with working at a startup, they build our service around a shared mission. Everyone shares the passion to realize "healthier lives for more women," and they set their own priorities based on the sense of responsibility that flows from it. And above all, they are people who believe in the power of accumulation and breakthrough.

What will Happy Moonday look like in 5 or 10 years?

No matter how many years pass—5, 10—women won't disappear and menstruation won't stop. This also means Happy Moonday's mission won't change. We create solutions and guidelines for the problems women face periodically and repeatedly within their life cycle, and we're waiting for more women to pass through the paths of the 'menstruation universe' we are building. Ultimately, we want to become a company that naturally blends into women's lives.

Mutual Sincerity Connected with DHP

What made you decide to accept investment from DHP?

Before receiving the investment, I was invited to a DHP office hour. There, I had the rare experience of having Happy Moonday's business understood and given feedback from the perspective of the entire 'healthcare' domain. After that experience, I became convinced that partnering with DHP as an investor and shareholder would have a positive influence on the company's long-term growth.

Is there anything memorable about your communication with DHP or its programs?

It's truly rare to find a house that monitors its portfolio so diligently and tries to help in every way possible. DHP is an investor whose sincerity in wanting to grow the healthcare domain, based on its healthcare expertise, comes through. For example, CEO Yoonsup Choi shared, via Slack, a paper about menstrual irregularities occurring after COVID vaccination. We had been accumulating related data too, and as a data review committee was being formed, CEO Yoonsup Choi personally participated as a member. For this research, DHP partner Sooyong Shin connected us with an obstetrics and gynecology professor at Samsung Medical Center, which accelerated the progress of the study.

There's only one sticker on my laptop, and it's the DHP sticker. There isn't even a Happy Moonday sticker on it (laughs). That's how genuinely DHP and its portfolio are with each other.
